Sarnath, is one of the most holy sites as in this place the stream of the Buddha's teaching first flowed. It is located 10 kilometers north-east of Varanasi, near the confluence of the Ganges and the Varuna rivers in Uttar Pradesh, India.
The Dhamek Stupa was built in 500 AD to replace an earlier structure commissioned by the great Mauryan King in 249 BC, along with several other monuments, to commemorate the Buddha's activities in this location. Stupa's were also built to house remains of to enshrine small pieces of calcifies bone and other relics of the Buddha disciples.
